For his outstanding achievements, ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr. was chosen by the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) as one of the engineering personalities to be featured at the opening exhibit of Chemical Engineering Week in Manila, Philippines. The exhibit aims to generate general public awareness on how Filipino chemical engineers have “continuously contributed to the technological, social and economic growth of the Philippines”.
Dr. Uriarte is a former member of the Cabinet as Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology; Principal Officer and Director, Information, Communication and Space Technology Division, United Nations ESCAP; Director for Functional Cooperation, ASEAN Secretariat; and Chairman, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of the Philippines. In the private sector, Dr. Uriarte was President and CEO of several companies such as the LAUDS Technologies, Inc. and TEST Consultants, Inc. and Vice President of Philippine Vinyl Consortium, Inc.
Dr. Uriarte earned his bachelors and masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Philippines and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in the United States. Over the years, Dr. Uriarte has received numerous awards and citations for his outstanding contributions as an engineer, scientist and manager, including TOYM in 1974, Outstanding Chemical Engineering Alumnus of the University of the Philippines and Outstanding Chemical Engineer from the Professional Regulation Commission.
PIChE celebrates Chemical Engineering Week every third week of September as declared by the Philippine Government under Proclamation No. 1365. This year’s celebration, with the theme “Chemical Engineers: Trailblazers of Progress”, will be held on September 13-20 to be highlighted by various activities and events across the country. |
