ASEAN Foundation supports ASEAN youth participation at the
East Asian Seas Congress

The ASEAN Foundation supported two activities of the 2009 East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress held on 23-27 November 2009 at the Philippine International Convention Centre (PICC), Manila, Philippines, with funding from the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund. About 90 young delegates and integrated coastal resource managers and experts from ASEAN Member States participated in the 2nd EAS Youth Forum and in the workshop on Meeting Human Resource Requirements in Coastal and Ocean Governance.

The 2nd EAS Youth Forum provided a venue to gather young leaders and environmental enthusiasts in the ASEAN region and other countries of the Seas of East Asia to share experiences and gain knowledge on coastal and ocean protection and development. Through series of discussions and interaction among peers, the young participants had the opportunity to better understand the pressing issues in marine and coastal environment and how they, the youth sector, can play an important role in addressing these concerns.

Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., ASEAN Foundation Executive Director, presented ASEAN and the ASEAN Foundation, its mandates and projects aimed at enhancing awareness of ASEAN and building the capacities of ASEAN youth. He stated that ASEAN takes on an active role in addressing youth and environmental concerns through various ministerial collaborations among ASEAN Member Countries. The ASEAN Foundation, on the other hand, supports numerous projects focusing on ASEAN youth that is in line with its mandate of promoting awareness and identity of ASEAN, enhancing interaction among ASEAN stakeholders and building human resources in the region. He emphasized the importance of instilling an ASEAN identity among the young generation who will become the future leaders of the region.

The ASEAN Foundation likewise supported the participation of around 30 integrated coastal resource managers and experts from ASEAN in the “Workshop on Meeting Human Resources Requirements in Coastal and Ocean Governance” where Dr. Uriarte presented the capacity-building projects supported by the ASEAN Foundation.

The ASEAN Foundation also participated in the exhibition of the 2009 East Asian Seas Congress where the over 1,400 Congress delegates from 43 countries had the opportunity to know more about the programs and projects of AF. Among the visitors of the AF booth were government officials from participating countries, representatives from the business community, international and regional organizations such as UNEP and GTZ, environmental experts and students from various Philippine universities. Ministers from ASEAN and other PEMSEA countries who attended the Third Ministerial Forum of the EAS Congress, also dropped by the ASEAN Foundation booth.
