ASEAN Foundation – MAIDS Scholarship Program

The ASEAN Foundation (AF) is pleased to grant 1 full scholarship for a Thai national interested in studying at the Master of Arts program in International Development Studies (MAIDS) program at Chulalongkorn University for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Of the five slots under the AF-MAIDS Scholarship Program, three slots were given to Ms. San Latt Phyu of Myanmar, Ms. Rukka Sombolinggi of Indonesia and Ms. Marly Anne Estrada of the Philippines who were selected for academic year 2008-2009. The fourth slot has been awarded to Ms. Seng Nu Pan of Myanmar, who is currently studying at MAIDS. The fifth slot remains to be filled by a Thai national for the upcoming academic year. 

The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), was established on 15 December 1997 to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries that include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The Foundation is mandated to promote greater awareness of ASEAN and greater interaction among its peoples and their increased participation in ASEAN activities as well as to undertake development cooperation activities that enhance mutual assistance, address equitable economic development and reduce poverty. This scholarship program is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies funded through the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund.

The Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University offers a Master of Arts program in International Development Studies, also known as the MAIDS program. The MAIDS program was established in 2003 and is the first international program at the Faculty to be taught in English.  It aims to enhance the capacity of the people in ASEAN in the field of development studies. It is expected that the enhancement of professionals in this field will facilitate regional development in ASEAN in the near future.

I.  Eligibility (1 Scholarship)

  1. Scholarship applicants must be bonafide ASEAN nationals from Thailand.
  2. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in the social sciences with a good overall academic standing;
  3. Candidates must have at least 2 years experience in a related field;
  4. Candidates must have demonstrated English proficiency on one of three recognized tests of language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or the CU-TEP). The minimum cut-off scores for MAIDS admission are available on our Admission Page;
  5. Candidates must provide a statement of purpose explaining why they are interested in studying International Development Studies at Chulalongkorn University . They must also outline their research interests in addition to their personal and professional objectives. In turn, candidates must also have research interests in line with the mandates of the ASEAN Foundation.

 IIScholarship Coverage

The scholarship will cover tuition and other academic fees, roundtrip airfare (if applicable), living allowances, health insurance and pre-session workshops.

Total Scholarship Value

Thai Scholarship: 14,369 USD/scholarship

III. Scholarship Conditions:

Applicants must both meet the minimum qualifications for MAIDS admission and be admitted to the MAIDS program.

AF-MAIDS scholars are expected to graduate within the prescribed period. Students who are required to enroll for additional trimester(s) will have to bear the additional cost of living and tuition fees.

IV. Application Period:

The AF-MAIDS scholarship applications are due March 31st, 2010. Program will commence October 2010. Applications should be sent directly to the MAIDS program.
