The ASEAN Foundation together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) and Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) jointly organized the Regional Conference on Mechanical and Aerospace Technology held on 9-10 February 2010 in Bali, Indonesia. The conference was attended by around 150 engineering experts from ASEAN and Japan and representatives from the government and private sectors.

With the theme “Building Education, Research, and Industrial Network through Collaboration”, the conference provided an opportunity for mechanical and aerospace engineers, professors and industry experts from AUN/SEED-Net Member Institutions, Japanese Supporting Institutions, international and regional organizations from ASEAN and other countries to get together to exchange trends and findings as well as to discuss potential collaborative activities on mechanical and aerospace technology. Five keynote presentations, 117 technical paper and 12 poster presentations were presented during the conference that highlighted research results on main aspects of the field, including challenges in industrial application and education.

ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr. and ITB Vice Rector for Communication and Resources Prof. Dr. Boy Kombaitan welcomed the participants that came from 14 countries in Asia Pacific and Australia. In his welcome remarks, Dr. Uriarte highlighted the role of the ASEAN Foundation in helping promote and establish the ASEAN Community. He emphasized that the AUN/SEEDNet regional conferences support the mandate of the ASEAN Foundation to develop human resources and enhance interaction among various ASEAN stakeholders, in this case, engineers, academicians, scientists and professionals.

The ASEAN Foundation, through the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund, in partnership with JICA, provides financial support to expand and enhance the educational and research engineering capacities of 19 leading engineering schools in ASEAN in cooperation with 11 leading Japanese universities. The ASEAN Foundation also provides funding support for graduate studies (master’s degree), research grants and other academic programs to upgrade faculty qualification and strengthen human linkages through visits and participation in field research and seminars.
