The Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., received the award as one of the “100 Outstanding Alumni Engineers” on the occasion of the celebration of 100 years of the founding of the College of Engineering, University of the Philippines. Since its founding, the U.P. College of Engineering had graduated over 16,500 engineers in various fields. The top 100 alumni engineers were honored, many posthumously, with a trophy designed by Prof. Napoleon Abueva, a Philippine National Artist in sculpture. Dr. Uriarte was the only awardee for the year 1965, the year he obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. The award was handed by the President of the University of the Philippines, the President of the U.P. Alumni Engineers Association, and the Dean of the College of Engineering. A coffee table book on the centennial of the college was also given to the awardees.
Dr. Uriarte has received numerous prestigious awards including the following: Fifty Men and Women of Science in the Philippines, given by the Department of Science and Technology, Republic of the Philippines (2008); Excellence Award, given by the Philippine Technology Council (2008); Outstanding Professional of the Year Award, given by the Professional Regulation Commission, Republic of the Philippines (2006); Conferred as Academician (a lifetime honor given to only 50 top scientists in the country), given by the National Academy of Science and Technology (2000); The ASEAN Engineering Award, given by the Singapore Institution of Engineers (1999), Outstanding Chemical Engineer, given by the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (1989); Award of Distinction, given by the Industrial Research Foundation (1986); Diamond Jubilee Award for the Most Outstanding Chemical Engineering Alumnus, given by the University of the Philippines (1985); Achievement Award, given by the National Research Council of the Philippines (1985); Outstanding Quezonian, given by the Quezon (Tayabas) Association (1984); Outstanding Young Scientist Award in Engineering, given by the National Academy of Science and Technology (1984); Earth Award for R&D on Environmentally Sound Technology, given by the National Environmental Protection Council (1982); Outstanding Leaders of the Philippines (Who’s Who 1980); Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (1974); Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society (Carnegie-Mellon University, 1970 and University of the Philippines, 1965).
