The ASEAN Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (DEPLU) formalized its partnership to undertake the “ASEAN Youth Wallacea Expedition”, a project that will gather ASEAN youth in a week-long cultural and environmental expedition of the Wallacea region in Ternate, Indonesia. The signing ceremony was held on 4 June 2010 led by Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., ASEAN Foundation Executive Director and Mr. Irmawan Emir Wisnandar, Director for ASEAN Functional Cooperation, Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia.
Under this project, the ASEAN Foundation will support the participation of 30 youth delegates from the 10 ASEAN member countries in the Wallacea biodiversity expedition to Ternate’s rich heritage sites. The expedition aims to promote cooperation and friendship among the young adults of ASEAN countries while learning to appreciate the region’s heritage sites and biodiversity. With funding support from the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund, the project addresses the mandate of the ASEAN Foundation to promote greater ASEAN awareness and identity and enhance interaction among the youth of the region.
The project has also received funding support from the Ternate Local Government and the ASEAN Singapore Youth Fund and will be implemented by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Youth and Sports (MENPORA). The weeklong expedition will be conducted from 25 June to 1 July 2010 with a formal opening ceremony on 25 June 2010 in Jakarta before the delegates proceed to Ternate, Indonesia.
Named after Alfred Russel Wallace, a British naturalist and explorer, the Wallacea region is defined as a biogeographical designation for a group of Indonesian islands separated by deep water straits from the Asian and Australian continental shelves. The region has a high number of species that are unique to the area and is recognized internationally as a ‘biodiversity hotspot’.
