ASEAN Roadmap Workshop to enhance the role of Agricultural Cooperatives In the Agricultural Global Value Chain

Bangkok – 28 February 2019, The ASEAN Farmers’ Organisation Support Program (AFOSP) organised a workshop on ASEAN Roadmap for Enhancing the Role of Agriculture Cooperatives in the Global Value Chain 2018-2025 in Bangkok on 28 February 2019. The workshop aims to translate the Roadmap into a work plan that can harmonise the national cooperatives development with the four pillars of the Roadmap, namely institutional and capacity building, competitiveness, access to finance, and access to market. The workshop was attended by representatives from the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group Agricultural Cooperative (ASWGAC), development agencies, the private sector and representatives of farmers’ organisations under AFOSP-MTCP2 supported by EU and IFAD.

ASEAN Centre for the Development of Agricultural Cooperative (ACEDAC) Secretariat opened the workshop by presenting the ASEAN Policy Framework in Agricultural Cooperative Development. Continued by ASWGAC representatives Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand to present their National Agriculture Cooperative Development Strategy. During this event, participant had the opportunity to share their opinion on the best way to contribute to the Roadmap by the stakeholders especially relate to institutional/capacity development, access to finance for investments, working capital markets, competitiveness and access to market

This workshop is also a continuation of the 8th ASEAN Cooperative Business Forum 2019, with the aim to establishe and increase concrete cooperation among cooperatives, public – private sector, and development partners in ASEAN, leading to sustainable development for the benefit of cooperative members. Therefore, the implementation of the workshop on ASEAN Roadmap could become a great forum to increase ASEAN agricultural cooperatives’ cooperation and enhanced their participation in global value chain.

About ASEAN Farmers’ Organisation Support Programme (AFOSP)

Implemented since 2015, the ASEAN Farmers’ Organisation Support Programme has worked to improve livelihoods and food security for smallholder farmers across the ASEAN region. Funded through the European Union (EU) and the AFOSP has been implemented across the ASEAN region. The aim is to support ASEAN Framers’ Organisations to become: stable, performing, accountable organisations, capable of providing effective and sustainable services to their members, with the ability to influence policy and corporate processes on agriculture and food security issues at local, national, ASEAN regional and global levels.
