BACKGROUND

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia relations, the ASEAN Foundation, with support from the Australian Government through the Australian Mission to ASEAN, is pleased to organise the ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting Plus Australia 2024, inviting youth from ASEAN, Timor-Leste and Australia to discuss and brainstorm on improving ASEAN-Australia ties for the future. The theme of the program is ‘50 Years of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations: A Partnership for the Future’.

The ASEAN Foundation inaugurated the ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) in 2015, held in conjunction with the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since then, the ASEAN Foundation has been implementing the program annually in ASEAN countries with the exception of AFMAM implementation in 2020 – 2021 which was organised virtually due to COVID-19. This year, the ASEAN Foundation, in collaboration with the Australian Mission to ASEAN, will conduct the ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting Plus Australia 2024 (AFMAM Plus Australia 2024) at the ASEAN Headquarters/Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia in September 2024.

With the goal of promoting ASEAN and Dialogue Partner diplomacy within Southeast Asia and Australia, the program will provide participants with an opportunity to experience, exercise and increase their decision making and diplomacy skills and knowledge on the ASEAN-Australia relationship.

AFMAM PLUS AUSTRALIA 2024

The ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting Plus Australian 2024 (AFMAM Plus Australia 2024), invites tertiary education students from the 10 ASEAN countries, Timor-Leste, and Australia to promote and understand the roles and functions of ASEAN and its external partners through a fun yet educational approach and simulations of high-level ASEAN meetings. The program communicates ASEAN and its relations to a younger generation with significant interests in studying international relations and diplomacy.

The program aims to provide these students an authentic experience to understand ASEAN-Australia relations, as well as to enhance essential skills and knowledge, particularly on global awareness, cross-cultural skills, critical and inventive thinking, negotiation, public speaking, consensus-building. In addition, the extension of friendship circles across ASEAN and beyond also paves the way for people-to-people links and pursuing a partnership for the future.

During the program, you will participate in a series of activities:

  1. Pre-Conference Online Training: The online training for delegates is designed to ensure that the delegates attending the AFMAM Plus Australia 2024 have a certain degree of knowledge competence on ASEAN, the themes and topics, and foreign policy.
  2. In-Conference Training: On the first day of the conference, delegates would undergo training/informal consultation sessions to prepare them for further committee sessions. The sessions during the in-conference training cover information on a) Understanding the ASEAN Secretariat and Chair role; b) Protocols on Chairing and Facilitating; and c) Developing and Amending the Chair’s Statement.
  3. The AFMAM Plus Australia 2024: As the main event of the program, the AFMAM Plus Australia 2024 Conference will provide an avenue for delegates to experience a role as high-level ASEAN and Australian officials and partake in a series of ASEAN and ASEAN Plus meetings, leading to an Outcome Document which will be signed upon completion of the Program.

Your participation provides an excellent opportunity to develop your network and a sense of community, gain a better understanding of ASEAN Member States and their relations with external partners, and encourage mutual understanding. You will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of ASEAN's diversity and the ASEAN-Australia relationship. It is also an interactive and engaging process where YOU, the students, will role-play as high-level ASEAN officials and partake in a series of ASEAN Plus meetings.

TOPIC OVERVIEW

The overall theme for the program will be centred around celebrating ‘50 Years of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations: A Partnership for the Future’. ASEAN and Australia have built a strong relationship over five decades of cooperation since Australia became ASEAN’s first Dialogue Partner, contributing to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.

Topics for the three community pillars of ASEAN, ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), will be decided upon consultation and discussion with the Australian Mission to ASEAN in line with the overarching theme.
