The long-awaited day has arrived as it was the beginning of the activities which was planned diligently by the youths who are ready to do community work at the residence of Dayang Tengah and her two sisters in Mukim Sukang, Belait District, Brunei. The family lives along the river and the only mode of transportation we have are few boats to get to the house of Dayang Tengah and her two sisters. The youths' expressions showed that they were eager to participate in the activities that had been planned from the start.

The youth members are separated into groups according to their tasks, such as cleaning up the yard by burning dried leaves and rotting wood, cleaning the interior of the house by sweeping and polishing the furniture and measuring the house's length and breadth. They formed a campaign to clean her house since Dayang Tengah was unable to move much due to her physical limitation, thus the youths hoped that this team effort could somehow reduce her burden.

During the cleaning campaign, another group was tasked to proceed with installing wiring which is connected to the kitchen’s lamps. Two youth peeked out of the window, checking to see if the exterior wall is suitable and correct based on the measurements made before starting the wiring process.

After the youths completed their tasks, the activities for the day were concluded by presenting the donation of food and clean water to the Dayang Tengah and her two sisters from the generous public as well as from the youths themselves. It is known and informed that the families have not receive clean water for so long as it has been normal that they get their water resources for their daily use from collecting rainwater in big drums and also from the river during high tide.

Long cable of wires is required to connect the lights and the solar panel, thus the lads who measured the length and width of the house were also measuring the wire. The solar panel and the solar lights were the outcome of kind contributions from the public and PEMBELA members who wished to brighten up the house belonging to Dayang Tengah and her two sisters as a safety measure for the women who apparently living far from the main village.

Initially, they will have to use gasoline to fuel up the generators since they solely rely on electrical generators that saved up to only operate at night to brighten up the house. It is exhausting and depressing enough to hear that the family has to drive at least 2 hours to the town to buy petrol. Hence, with the solar panel and the lights, hopefully it could at least minimize the usage of the electrical generators. By the end of the camping program, the organizer and the youth members have agreed to continuously seeking public support to purchase solar lights to suitably fixed inside the house and its surrounding in the coming months. The effort includes the building of new water tanks and pipes for the family to reserve more rainwater for their daily external use.

The title "One Which Lights the Night" is symbolically described that the light energy from the sun is absorbed by the solar panel which then convert the store and solar energy into light energy in the house of Dayang Tengah and her family. Through this humble and simple solution, Dayang Tengah and her two sisters who are far from the village can significantly overcome the struggle in the consequential darkness as they received rays of joy and finally regained their faith on the continuous existence of humanity in the world.

CAHAYA SIRNA MALAM

Hari yang dinanti-nantikan telah tiba kerana merupakan permulaan aktiviti yang dirancang dengan tekun oleh para belia yang bersedia melakukan kerja kemasyarakatan untuk salah seorang penduduk Kuala Belait iaitu Dayang Tengah dan dua orang saudaranya yang bermastautin di pendalaman Mukim Sukang, Daerah Belait. Mereka tinggal di sepanjang alur sungai dan satu satunya cara pengangkutan adalah dengan menggunakan perahu.

Para belia-belia dibahagikan ke dalam beberapa kumpulan. Di antara tugas-tugas berikut adalah seperti membersihkan halaman dengan membakar daun kering dan ranting-ranting kayu, membersihkan bahagian dalam rumah dengan menyapu dan mengelap perabot serta mengukur panjang dan lebar rumah tersebut. Kempen kebersihan ini juga dibuat kerana ingin membantu Dayang Tengah oleh kerana disebabkan keterbatasan fizikal Dayang Tengah yang menghadkan pergerakan sehariannya.

Semasa kempen kebersihan dijalankan, aktiviti pemasangan kabel juga dijalankan di mana pemasangan kabel ini disambungkan ke lampu dapur. Para belia juga membuat pemeriksaan keadaan luar rumah berdasarkan ukuran yang dibuat sebelum proses pendawaian dimulakan.

Setelah para belia dan beliawanis menyelesaikan tugasan mereka, aktiviti pada hari tersebut diakhiri dengan acara penyampaian sumbangan berupa catuan makanan dan botol air bersih kepada Dayang Tengah dan dua orang saudaranya. Sumbangan itu adalah merupakan sumbangan ikhlas daripada orang ramai dan juga para belia dan beliawanis sendiri. Seperti yang diambil maklum bahawa amat susah bagi keluarga Dayang Tengah untuk memperolehi air bersih kerana satu-satunya sumber air bagi mereka hanyalah dengan mengumpulkan air hujan di tong besar dan juga air sungai semasa air sungai pasang.

Kabel wayar yang panjang diperlukan untuk menyambungkan lampu dan panel suria mengikut ukuran panjang dan lebar rumah tersebut yang telah diukur awal oleh belia-belia tadi. Panel suria dan lampu suria adalah hasil sumbangan ehsan dari orang ramai dan ahli-ahli Persatuan PEMBELA yang berhasrat untuk membantu dari segi sumber bekalan cahaya pada rumah milik Dayang Tengah dan dua orang saudaranya sebagai langkah keselamatan terutama sekali sebagai kaum wanita yang tinggal jauh di pedalaman.

Pada asalnya, mereka biasanya menggunakan minyak petrol untuk diisi ke generator penjana elektrik yang membekalkan tenaga elektrik ke dalam rumah mereka. Oleh yang demikian, mereka terpaksa bergantung pada penjana elektrik tersebut agar terus berfungsi untuk menerangi rumah mereka pada waktu malam. Cukup menyedihkan dan kasihan apabila para belia mendengar cerita keluarga Dayang Tengah mengenai kesukaran yang dihadapi apabila mereka terpaksa memandu sekurang-kurangnya 2 jam ke pekan atau keluar ke bandar hanya untuk membeli bekalan minyak petrol. Oleh kerana itulah, para belia berpendapat bahawa adanya panel suria dan lampu suria seperti yang telah dipasang, sekurangkurangnya dapat meminimumkan lagi penggunaan tenaga elektrik. Menjelang akhir program perkhemahan, pihak penganjur dan para belia telah bersetuju untuk terus mendapatkan sokongan dan bantuan orang ramai agar dapat membeli beberapa unit lampu suria sebagai tambahan untuk dipasang lengkap di dalam rumah dan kawasan sekitarnya yang bakal dirancang dalam masa terdekat pada tahun ini. Usaha ini juga termasuklah pembinaan tangki air dan paip baru buat keluarga tersebut supaya memudahkan lagi mereka untuk mendapatkan lebih banyak bekalan air hujan bagi kegunaan harian mereka.

Secara simboliknya, judul "Cahaya Sirna Malam" memberi maksud bahawa tenaga cahaya dari matahari yang diserap oleh panel suria menjadi tenaga cahaya yang dapat menerangi seluruh rumah Dayang Tengah dan keluarganya. Melalui solusi ini, Dayang Tengah dan keluarga yang tinggal jauh di pedalaman akhirnya dapat mengatasi kesukaran mereka yang telah sekian lama hidup di dalam kegelapan malam dengan cahaya yang sangat terhad sebelumnya. Akhirnya, mereka telah beroleh rezeki dengan menerima sinar baru yang merupakan cahaya kegembiraan bagi mereka yang telah bersabar dan redha dengan nasib mereka selama ini dan meningkatkan keyakinan mereka bahawa masih wujudnya ehsan kemanusiaan di atas muka bumi ini.
